I had to write the presidency message for Relief Society this month. I love Sheri L. Dew. If I could aspire to have even a tenth of her wisdom . . . it would be great.
As we go through life, we hold many roles that change through time: a little princess in dress-up clothes, a player on a sports team, choir member, waitress, nurse, secretary, or the best gardener on the block, but one title that will never change is we are women of God.
Sheri L. Dew, former counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency, spoke of coming unto Christ and walking away from the world. It means placing Christ and Christ only at the center of our lives. The Savior promised us, "In this world your joy is not full, but in me your joy is full" (D&C 101:36). President Spencer W. Kimball said, "If we insist on spending all our time and resources building up . . . a worldly kingdom, that is exactly what we will inherit."
Often we are focused on pursuing the good life and we lose our eternal perspective. Sis. Dew compared it to selling our birthright for a mess of pottage. We can't short-change ourselves! My mother hung a meticulously embroidered quote in our kitchen that said, "Don't trade what you want most for what you want at the moment." With so many worldly distractions, it can be difficult to stay focused on what the world wants vs. what is best for our eternal salvation. Sis. Dew taught, "The Lord's standard of behavior will always be more demanding than the world's, but then the Lord's rewards are infinitely more glorious, including true joy, peace, and salvation."
Relief Society can help us turn away from the world with its purpose to help sisters and their families come to Christ. The lessons from the Lord's servants and living prophets remind us of His love and counsel to get us through the challenges of each day and remain the women of God that we are.
